お正月は、どこでも、しめ飾りをし、神だなに鏡餅を供え、お雑煮を食べて、新しい年を祝う。三か日ともお雑煮のうちが多いが、中味はさまざまであん入り餅のところもある。
松の内は、古来の行事や郷土の慣わしが多い。農家は、くわ初めといって、田んぼの一角を清めて鏡もちを供え、豊作を祈る商家は、帳祝いといって、新しい元帳などに鏡もちを供え、商売繁盛を願う。
Ａ新倉敷では、毎年、にぎやかにお正月の餅つきをしている。親類同士で、たくさん餅をつくところもある。１５日は小正月とか女正月といい、またお餅である。私が子供のころは、改暦の名残りか、新正月、旧正月と、二度お正月を迎えていた。
高梁市の方で、栃木県の日光町長をされたこともある清水比庵さんは、歌や書、画に秀でていた。いつぞ、「ふるさとの餅は色白柔肌のまろくめでたき乙女餅かも」と詠んでいる。
お餅は、まん丸いものとばかり思っていたら、私が東京にいたとき、お雑煮の餅は、四角であった。今はどうだろうか、それに、お雛様に備えるお餅はひし形である。
お餅にまつわることわざも、いくつかある。「たなからぼたもち」は、思わぬ幸運に恵まれることで、良い。でも、「しりもちをつく」は良くない。だれも転ばないで、日々楽しく過ごしたい。

There are certainly some good things about this production. The porter scene, famous for how direly it is often rendered, has excellent visual surprises, which I shall not reveal. And some other lines in other parts of the play that often cause inappropriate mirth – “He has killed me, mother.
